Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG)

Details about procedure (Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty)

How Does it Work & how effective it is?

After stitching the stomach becomes narrower and the volume reduction of the stomach following ESG is approximately 60- 70%.

In addition, the ESG slows the ability of the stomach to empty, which further enhances & prolongs satiety like gastric balloon or sleeve surgery and this makes the patient to feel full for longer period of time.

Studies show the procedure, when combined with a comprehensive dietary and lifestyle program, leads to an average of approximately 15-25% of total body weight over 12- 18 months. This procedure is good for people whose BMI is between 30 – 40, when compared to other weight loss procedures, ENDOSCOPIC SLEEVE GASRTROPLASTY gives results in between Gastric balloon ( Elipse or Orbera)&   sleeve surgery  in terms of weight loss.

The procedure is designed to be permanent, however the stitches can be removed in early weeks (returning the stomach to full volume) if needed.

The procedure having been developed in 2012, however data show persistent weight loss out to 5 years. It is expected that there may be some weight regain as the stitches loosen or break, however this can be prevented by life style changes which is highly recommended for all weight loss procedure or by applying more sutures in future if needed.

Side effects and risks?

Side effects like after any other weight loss procedure may include abdominal pain, nausea, cramping and vomiting, these side effects may last 2-3 days and then disappear.

Statistically risks of bleeding and infection is less than 1% & manageable.
